Friends of the Mystic River
Friends of the Mystic River is a Medford-based community organization focused on the enjoyment, protection, and enhancement of the Mystic River. Founded as a group of concerned citizens in 1995, they work to:
- Improve water quality to meet the standard of swimmable water
- Preserve and restore riverine wildlife habitat
- Promote public awareness and community involvement in the river
- Improve access and create habitat-sensitive recreation opportunities
Medford Arts Center, Inc.
Medford Arts Center, Incorporated (MACI) encourages and promotes the arts in Medford through arts appreciation and education and provides support for Medford artists. Our goals include:
- establishment of an arts center as a community resource for the arts
- providing a space through the Medford Arts Center for exhibitions, meetings, lectures, classes, workspace, and the free exchange of ideas among artists and the Medford community
- encouraging the development of diverse art forms to include visual, performance, and written media
- implementing activities to exhibit and encourage artistic growth.
Medford Garden Club
The Medford Garden Club is open to Medford residents and non-residents. The club was founded in May 1998 with the purpose of providing a way for norice and experienced gardeners to get to know each other, share information, learn from guests speakers, and participate in community beautification projects. Medford Green Line Neighborhood Alliance
The Medford Green Line Neighborhood Alliance (MGNA) is a group of citizens who support the proposed Green Line extension to Medford, and who advocate for proactive involvement from the city, its residents and all stakeholders to ensure that the extension is completed in a manner that is most beneficial to the community.
Medford-Brooks Estate Land Trust
The Brooks Estate is owned by the people of Medford, Massachusetts and has been permanently protected. The Medford-Brooks Estate Land Trust, Inc (M-BELT) is the community nonprofit membership organization dedicated solely to the preservation and restoration of this wonderful historic open space.
Medford Clean Energy Committee
Mayor Michael McGlynn created the Medford Clean Energy Committee (MCEC) in January 2004 to augment the city's effort to become a municipal leader in the use of clean power. MCEC's goal is to promote clean power options and encourage the development of renewable energy in Medford. The Committee is made up of Medford residents appointed by the Mayor.
Medford Climate Action Network
MedfordCAN is a local Medford group who believes that the potential for global climate change due to increasing greenhouse gas emissions cannot be ignored. The mission of the Medford Climate Action Network is to help achieve greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals by:
- increasing awareness of global climate change and what to do about it,
- increasing membership in Medford's Climate Action Network,
- promoting actions and behaviors that lower greenhouse gas emissions,
- developing support for Medford's Climate Action Plan
- working with other groups, such as the Massachusetts Climate Action Network, to influence state and national policies.
Medford Conservation Commission
The Medford Conservation Commission is responsible for the administration of environmental laws and policies, open space protection and management, water management, and preservation of natural features of the environment.
The Medford Conservation Commission is required to protect and preserve wetlands and their surrounding areas, as well as open space. The Conservation Commission consists of seven members, all of which are appointed by the Mayor. At bimonthly meetings the commission members work to ensure that all construction and development projects, residential, industrial and commercial, that may alter any wetlands, floodplains, rivers, streams, ponds, lakes and/or associated buffer zones or riverfront areas are in compliance with state and local regulations.
Medford Energy & Environment Office
The Energy and Environment Office (E&E) is responsible for overseeing and implementing environmentally sound programs in the City of Medford. In cooperation with other departments and organizations, the E&E office works to improve energy efficiency, air quality, climate change protection, wetlands protection, open space conservation, and stormwater management.
Medford Health Matters Environmental Health Task Force
Medford Health Matters (MHM) was formed in 1995 as a community coalition. It was initially affiliated with Lawrence Memorial Hospital but became an independent entity in 1999. In 2002, MHM received non-profit 501(c)3 status and elected its first executive committee. With the help of Northeast Center for Healthy Communities, MHM began to apply the principles of "Healthy Communities" in its work. Starting with a public forum and key informant interviews, MHM learned what residents and leaders of Medford believed were the city's strengths and weaknesses and created an action plan to address the needs identified by the community.
Roots & Shoots of Massachusetts
Roots & Shoots is a powerful, youth-driven network fosters a fun, flexible and supportive environment where young people and adults alike come together to share ideas and inspiration, implement successful community service projects and participate in special events and global campaigns.
Medford Street Tree Advisory Group
The Medford Street Tree Advisory Group (McStag) is comprised of citizens of Medford, Massachusetts, who wish to work with residents and city government to develop sustainable methods to choose, install and maintain street trees throughout the city. Anyone can join!
Mystic River Watershed Association
The overarching goal of the Mystic River Watershed Association is to achieve “fishable and swimmable water” by the year 2010. MRWA works toward this goal through advocacy, outreach, and water quality monitoring.
Mystic Watershed Collaborative
The Mystic Watershed Collaborative (MWC) envisions strategies and catalyzes the resources of Tufts University and MyRWA to address challenges and opportunities in the Mystic Watershed. The MWC was formalized in 2000 under the leadership of President DiBiaggio. In 2005 on the 5th anniversary of the MWC, President Bacow reaffirmed Tufts University's commitment to the restoration of the Mystic River Watershed.
Tufts Climate Initiative
The Tufts Climate Initiative is the pioneer in the field of climate change mitigation at institutions of higher learning. In 1999, Tufts University committed to meeting or exceeding the Kyoto target for its greenhouse gas emissions. Tufts University was among the very first to make sustainability a high priority in its teaching, planning, and operations. TCI is continuing this tradition of being a forerunner by choosing the ambitious approach of fostering change on a university wide level.
Tufts Institute of the Environment
Tufts Institute of the Environment (TIE) is an interdisciplinary, university-wide education and research institute which facilitates and coordinates environmental programs at the University. TIE is devoted to advancing and disseminating knowledge about the many ways human interactions affect the environment. TIE focuses on environmental research, technology, policy development and education, recognizing the interdependence of human welfare, animal health, and ecological integrity.
